Equipment for the disabled

In order for people with disabilities to move freely, devices consisting of a lifting mechanism and a platform, most often hydraulically or electrically driven, are used. All these devices to safely transport a disabled person are subject to technical supervision. They are installed in such a way as to overcome all architectural barriers for people with reduced mobility. These machines are included handling equipment abbreviated as UTB.

Types of devices

Operation of devicesCranes stairs are devices located at the stairs outside or inside buildings. They move in an inclined plane between several levels. They are intended for people in wheelchairs and other disabled people. They have components, which makes it possible to assemble the device at any time during its standstill. Various types of construction of devices are used, including tilt platforms and chair lifts.

Vertical lifting platforms installed outside and inside buildings to serve several landing levels. They have the possibility of a higher load capacity than stairlifts. They have a screw or hydraulic chain drive. The construction and dimensions of the structure enable the passage of a passenger with limited mobility in a wheelchair and of its guardian.

In order to properly select a device for a disabled person, it is best to take into account the factors related to the device and factors related to the place and location of the device installation at the stage of designing a house or building.

Operation of devices

As mentioned above, the devices are subject to technical inspection and should be maintained in accordance with their intended use and operating instructions:

  • The operator must equip the devices with operating instructions
  • For the safe maintenance of the device, the operator is obliged to ensure proper maintenance in accordance with the applicable requirements
  • All maintenance should be recorded and kept in the maintenance logbook conducted by the operator.
  • For UTB devices equipped with electrical devices, the operator must ensure the documentation and execution of:
    1) measurements of the insulation strength of electric wires, paying particular attention to the fire protection and safety circuits, at least:
    a) once a year - in the case of devices:
    - used to move people,
    - working outside
    - in rooms and zones with corrosive or explosive fumes,
    b) once every 2 years - for machines operating conditions other than those specified in the previous point.
    2) strength measurements, as long as lightning and working earthing and fire protection are used, at least:
    a) once a year - in the case of devices:
    - used to move people,
    - working in open spaces or in places with increased humidity, hot and corrosive fumes,
    b) once every 2 years - for machines operating conditions other than those mentioned in the previous point.
