IRATA course schedule

The IRATA course usually lasts five days and includes both intensive practical and theoretical classes. During the first four days, participants perform exercises on training structures, learn descent techniques, rope access, self-rescue and the principles of stable rope system installation. Instructors ensure an individual approach, regular consultations and continuous implementation of safety rules. The fifth day is devoted to an examination conducted by an external IRATA assessor, who evaluates the trainees' skills in accordance with TACS standards.

IRATA certificate

After passing the examination, the participant receives an IRATA certificate, a technician card and an entry in the work log. The certificate is valid for three years, after which it can be renewed by retaking the exam or completing a refresher course. The document confirms the participant's competence in working at height, using rope techniques and complying with safety standards. It is one of the most valued certificates in the height industry and significantly increases the technician's credibility in the eyes of employers.

To facilitate understanding of the system, we present a brief table concerning the validity and scope of the rights obtained:

The importance of IRATA and its impact on safety

IRATA is an international organisation that sets standards for working at height using rope access techniques. Its guidelines ensure that teams work in accordance with best safety practices and that rescue procedures are clearly defined and regularly practised. Every IRATA-certified technician knows the rules that apply when working on ropes – from equipment checks to emergency procedures.

Thanks to a Level 3 technician-based supervision system, rope access work is carried out within a clearly defined structure of responsibility. The organisation promotes a culture of safety, regular training and transparency in documenting activities. The result is a significant reduction in the number of accidents and the creation of a global standard that thousands of companies rely on.

Requirements for course participants

Training participants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid certificate confirming that there are no contraindications to working at heights. Their health should allow them to perform intense physical exercise and remain in a harness for long periods of time. In addition, appropriate mental preparation is required – technicians must act prudently, responsibly and in accordance with procedures.

For higher levels, appropriate entries in the logbook documenting the working time are also required. This applies primarily to levels L2 and L3, where the candidate must demonstrate the appropriate number of working hours and the passage of the required time since the previous certification level.

How to prepare for an IRATA course?

Before starting the training, it is worth taking care of your general physical condition, as the exercises require strength, endurance and freedom of movement on ropes. We recommend that participants familiarise themselves with basic safety rules and general rope techniques, which will make it easier to absorb the material during the course. It is also advisable to prepare sports clothing and comfortable footwear that does not restrict movement when working in a harness.

Before the class, participants should bear in mind a few key points:

  • adequate sleep before the training day,
  • taking water and small snacks,
  • performing a light warm-up before climbing onto the structure for the first time,
  • adequate hydration and avoiding heavy meals before training.

IRATA levels – L1, L2, L3

Level L1

Level 1 is the basic level in the IRATA system. Participants learn how to perform simple rope manoeuvres, move vertically and horizontally, the basics of self-rescue, and how to set up systems correctly. A Level 1 technician always works under the supervision of a Level 3 technician and does not undertake independent planning activities. This is the best choice for people who are just entering the industry and want to start a career in rope access.

Level L2

A Level 2 technician performs more advanced tasks, including building complex rope systems and conducting selected rescue operations. Candidates must have completed Level 1, have the required number of working hours and documented experience. L2 is a step towards greater responsibility and preparation for a supervisory role.

Level L3

Level L3 is the highest level of certification. A person holding this certification acts as a team leader, plans activities, assesses risks and is responsible for safety. L3 has advanced rescue skills and the ability to resolve difficult operational situations. This is a level for experienced, competent technicians who are ready to perform supervisory functions.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Do I need to have experience to enrol in the IRATA L1 course?

No, Level 1 does not require any prior experience. The course is designed to introduce participants to the basics of working at height and rope techniques. Participants receive full support from instructors who explain all manoeuvres and procedures step by step.

How long does the IRATA course and examination take?

The training lasts five days, the first four of which consist of intensive practical exercises and lectures. The fifth day is devoted to an examination which assesses readiness to work in accordance with IRATA standards. The examination consists of both practical and theoretical parts and is supervised by an independent assessor.

How long is an IRATA certificate valid for and how can I renew it?

The IRATA certificate is valid for three years, regardless of the level. Before it expires, technicians can take a renewal exam or refresher training. This process allows them to update their knowledge and re-test their skills, ensuring that they maintain the standards required for working at height. Regular renewal of qualifications emphasises professionalism and attention to safety.

Do I need a logbook to progress to Level 2?

Yes, the logbook is a mandatory document for advancement to higher levels. To enrol in the L2 course, you must document the required number of hours worked as an L1 technician. The logbook shows continuity of experience and also allows instructors to assess your readiness for training at a more advanced level. This makes the entire system transparent and based on verifiable data.

What documents will I receive after passing the IRATA examination?

After passing the examination, the participant receives an IRATA certificate, an identification card, and an entry in the logbook. These documents confirm the qualification and are required when taking up work in rope access.

Can a Level 1 technician work independently?

No, an L1 technician always works under the supervision of an L3-level person. This working model ensures safety for both the employee and the entire team.

How to prepare physically for an IRATA course?

Although the course is not a typical sports training programme, it requires fitness and endurance. It is worth taking care of your overall fitness, especially your arm, back and abdominal muscles.

Can I use my own equipment during the training?

Yes, it is possible to use your own equipment, provided that it meets all safety standards and is approved by the instructor. The equipment must be in good technical condition, with legible markings and valid inspections. The instructor will assess whether it can be used during the course. This allows participants to train on equipment that will be used later at work.

Can I renew my IRATA certificate without taking the full course?

Yes, the IRATA system allows for certificate renewal without having to repeat the entire training process. All you need to do is take a renewal exam or attend a refresher course if the instructor deems it necessary. Renewal allows technicians to maintain their qualifications and confirm their competence. It is a quick and effective way to continue working in the profession.
